Hi! I’m John Burton, inventor of Card Free American Mah Jongg. I’m an independent game designer and Mahjong enthusiast. I’ve always been a tinkerer, never being able to leave well enough alone. I was inspired to create Card Free American Mah Jongg because I really enjoyed the gameplay of American Mah Jongg, but didn’t like being forced to buy a card every year and be limited to just those hands. Being inspired by Mahjong variants from Asia such as Hong Kong style, Sichuan style, and Riichi from Japan, I set out to create a method for playing with the American Mah Jongg rules without using the card of approved hands. Thus, Card Free American Mah Jongg was born. I hope you enjoy playing this variant and I am always happy to talk to players about their experience trying it out.
